In the last 30 years I have directed more than 500 productions ranging from music revues, musical theatre, comedy, Shakespeare, classical Opera and more ceremonies and corporate events that I care to remember. Some of the highlights of my career include….
TAXI JAM – a musical written and directed by myself and the KWASA interns in 1994 which won the National Vita Award for the Best Production of a new SA play. I won a regional Best Director award with this. It tells the tale of a young runaway who ends up in the taxi industry. While working he comes into contact with the dynamics of the late apartheid era and becomes of victim of those forces. It is a humorous, moving story told in a uniquely South African township musical style. The original cast was 13 pax. It could probably be smaller if roles a further shared.
PRINCESS MAGOGO KA DINUZULU – the first Zulu language opera in the history of the world. This groundbreaking opera has been seen in the USA, Norway, the Netherlands and throughout South Africa. Composed by Mzilikazi Khumalo from a libretto by Themba Msimang adapted for the opera stage by myself. Premiered and commissioned by Opera Africa in Durban in 2001.
SHEER MADNESS – the hilarious whodunnit received its Durban Premier under my direction in 2007. It garnered two Durban Theatre Awards and played to packed houses later in the year at the Hilton Arts Festival.
JIMBO, the musical written by Hamish Kyd, Themi Venturas and the late Siva Devar went on to have three celebrated capacity filled seasons at the Playhouse in Durban. It tell the tale of the gangs that ruled the Indian Fresh Produce market in the late 60’s.
THE GUITAR THAT ROCKED THE WORLD is an award winning musical that celebrates the legendary Fender Stratocaster created by Leo Fender. This guitar has been played by a myriad of legends beginning with Buddy Holly in the 50’s, the late great Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Mark Knopfler
THE COMPLEAT HSTRY OD DBN (without the boring bits)
This fun work was inspired by the sort of work that has been done by the Reduced Shakespeare Company. After seeing both their Complete Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (abridged) and the Complete History of America and the Complete Old Testament we were inspired to give this treatment to the History of Durban. A cartoon timeline by Ewok and 2D costumes applied by Valcro allowed 5 actors to play a myriad of characters in this epic tale
